Everything has a name – you, me, your pet, and the street where you live. Some names are simple; did you know the most popular cat name in the United States is Kitty? Other names are more nuanced, such as the café in the Santa Ynez Valley called Sides, Hardware and Shoes.
And what about winery names? They run the gamut from family names to names that have special meanings— meanings that, until now, were known only to a select few. It appears that older vineyards used more traditional naming techniques, whereas newer wineries seem to be choosing names that embrace a journey, or pay homage to some person or thing.
